Will was sulking.

“I thought you’d be happy to get out of the house,” Trish said. They were in the parking lot at Pee Wee’s Pizza.

He shrugged. “Should I call her Aunt Billie or what?”

“Yeah, sure, she’s your aunt,” Trish tried to sound confident, but she wasn’t at all convinced Billie would react warmly to being called “aunt.”

Trish didn’t get her. One minute Billie was about to blow her off and the next she was inviting her to meet her husband. Of course, Trish had been so nervous she probably freaked Billie out even more than the situation would normally. She had relived the conversation in her mind a hundred times and each time she wanted to kick herself for not saying the right thing. Whatever that might be.

She checked herself in the rearview mirror. She was wearing a pair of her new jeans, a black tank top, and an oversize yellow linen shirt. She brushed dog hair off her jeans, which she had thought she had gotten all of before she left the house. “How do I look?”

“How you look isn’t what you should be worrying about. The only thing that matters is your relationship with the Lord.”

Trish sighed and ran her hand over Will’s short curls until he pulled away.

“I thought you were supposed to honor thy mother?”

Will looked surprised, but Trish didn’t feel the least bit guilty. If she was a hypocrite to use his religion against him, then fine. She couldn’t bear her own son pulling away from her.

The band was setting up on a small stage in the back of the room. Trish looked for the piano player. He was so not what she expected. He had on Dockers and a polo shirt like a big old dork, not a hip jazz guy. Where was his ponytail? His fedora or beret? His goatee? His leather jacket? His earrings and tattoos? Why am I thinking he should look like Aaron Neville? she wondered.

None of the musicians looked like jazz guys. The young sax player was in a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. The bass player wore a suit and tie, looking like a banker. The drummer, a balding white guy, was in jeans and a Hawaiian shirt. They all looked so … regular. I have got to get out of the house more.

Billie came in behind Trish and Will. She was in a kimono-like red jacket with baggy black silk pants and turquoise jewelry. Even though Trish had dressed up for the occasion, she looked just like what she was: a boring mom. At least she had worn her silver kitty-cat earrings in Billie’s honor.

“Didn’t I tell you, you look just like your aunt?” Trish asked Will as they sat down.

Billie and Will smiled shyly at each other, both obviously amazed at the resemblance. Trish felt warmth spread through her. She wanted to hug both of them. She wanted them to hold hands and sing “Kumbayah.” She imagined them all together at her house for Christmas. She’d buy
